Generate a pictorial dictionary
Images are well-suited for learning the words of foreign languages. Using Smage,
image regions can be associated with words that are automatically translated into
other languages when a coded image is explored. The connection between the image
region and the word describing that region facilitates the learning process.
To encode a dictionary entry, the following steps are necessary:
- Selection of the image region, with which the dictionary entry is associated
(left image below).
- Upon pressing the button highlighted in the right image below, a dialog for
entering the vocable appears.
- The left image below shows the dialog for entering a vocable in an afore
selected language. Typically, translations of this vocable are not necessary
since the program is accompanied by a file with the basic vocabulary.
- After pressing the OK button, a D icon is integrated in the image
(right image below). The vocable can be edited by selecting this icon.
- Finally, dictionary entries are encoded into the image by pressing the button
highlighted in the left image below.
- The right image below shows the result. As the mouse cursor enters a coded
region, a window appears that can be sticked at its location. The languages to be shown
within this window can be selected in the menu Image Dictionary (right
image below).
